2nd Annual Mashpee Kiwanis Golf Outing
Opiate addiction has become a real concern in our Cape Cod Communities over recent years. The epidemic continues to gain strength as the use of pain killers increases, enabling us and our youth to develop dependencies on these drugs and this can result in dire and often deadly consequences.
How can we help fight the epidemic that’s sweeping our region? The key in fighting addiction is education. There are programs within our Cape Cod Communities that are designed to educate consumers about opiate addiction as well as help those who are affected on their path to recovery. Without these programs, we could be standing by and watching while opiate addiction takes over our schools and our streets.
The mission of Kiwanis International is to change the world, one child at a time. We do so by helping programs, like those described above, gain traction in communities throughout the world. The Kiwanis Club of Mashpee has made it a goal to help in eliminating the threat of opiate addiction in our local communities. We will be fighting addiction by raising funds to help addiction education, prevention and treatment programs obtain resources and gain visibility within Cape Cod Communities. The more widespread our message becomes, the sooner we can prevent the spread of addiction.
Our main fundraising event to support opiate addiction education programs is our 2nd Annual Mashpee Kiwanis Golf Outing held at The Ridge Club on May 8, 2017. Below, please find a tournament entry form as well as a tournament sponsorship form. We hope that you will join us in our fight against addiction through your involvement in our annual golf event. We were able to raise over $8,000 last year in our first annual event! This year, our goal is to raise $11,000 to support opiate addiction education, prevention and treatment programs on Cape Cod, but we can’t do it without your support. Please consider sponsoring our event and/or entering your foursome today!
Should you have any questions regarding the event, please feel free to reach out to us directly via phone or e-mail. You will find our contact information below and we look forward to seeing you on the links on May 8th!

Thanks to the Mashpee 99 Restaurant and Maya Brainson and her Angel ornaments the Mashpee Kiwanis was able to present Tim and Joan Martinage of the Cape Cod Military Support Foundation numerous gift cards to replace the the items lost in a devastating fire last October.
Joan and Tim Martinage accepted the gifts this past Saturday from Tammy Gray and Terrie Cook.
The Mashpee Kiwanis continues its great work through the efforts of its members.
At the Mashpee Kiwanis Meeting on December 1st we had Speaker,Tara B. Carline, Special Police Officer &Victim /Witness Advocate of the Mashpee Police Department, talk about her efforts to help with preventing violence prevention. We also had a very special guest, Nancy Umina, whose late husband, Jerry Umina, and a long time Mashpee Kiwanis member was the Mashpee Police Dept's liaison to many agencies and the Mashpee School Dept. to be an advocate for the victims of domestic violence. We had Ms. Carline give us some ideas on how best to use the memorial donations to our club in Jerry's memory.

Mashpee Kiwanis has suffered the loss of one of its most loved members. On September 8th, 2016 Jerry Umina passed away. It was not unexpected. The club had watched his failing health for some time. Still, he came to meetings, contributed his vote on issues and completed all but the meeting the week before he passed. His love of what he did, the way he did it, and the way he helped each and every member of the Mashpee Kiwanis, made things and events that much more fun and productive for not only our club, but all of the clubs in our Cape Cod division and, in fact, the whole New England and Bermuda district of Kiwanis. He connected with so many people while he was Lieutenant Governor and his energy was always infectious. He was present at all major Kiwanis occasions, and always ready to help set up, break down or spend the day working at the event. Our club members all have personal stories that involve Jerry and his quiet way of doing his best to make the project at hand a success.
Some of the positions that Jerry held in Kiwanis were as follows:
Club Treasurer – Club President -member of board of directors – Lieutenant Governor of the Cape Cod Kiwanis Clubs – in charge of wishing wells – worked at Kiwanis “One Day” every year. The list could go on and on. He would be the first to volunteer to go to an interclub with another Kiwanis group. I think that was because he would try to “borrow” the visited club’s bell or gavel and “store” it until the other Kiwanians would come to visit us in Mashpee.
There will be a void in our club now that he has passed, but his legacy, his longevity, and his quiet mentoring, will be carried on in our membership. He will be quoted often, imitated often, and loved forever. As one member put it, Jerry was the sweetest man that you could ever disagree with. He always made you feel better for the attempt.
Rest easy our friend, your legacy will be safe with us.
